How Your South Coast Tour Works

From a Reykjavik pickup to waterfalls, black sands and glaciers, and back.

  1. Reykjavik Hotel Pickup

Your driver-guide collects you from your Reykjavik hotel or a nearby bus stop in the morning. Settle into a comfortable coach or minibus for the drive east.

  2. Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss

First the waterfalls: walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss, then stand before the thundering 60-metre wall of Skógafoss. Rainbows on a clear day are common.

  3. Reynisfjara & a Glacier

Continue to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach near Vík with its basalt columns and sea stacks, and to the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier. Longer tours push on to the glacier lagoon or an ice cave.

  4. Back to Reykjavik

Relax for the scenic drive home, arriving back in Reykjavik in the evening. In winter, some tours watch for the northern lights on the way.

The South Coast of Iceland: What You'll See and How to Choose

The waterfalls, black beach and glacier on the classic day, when to extend to the glacier lagoon or an ice cave, and how to dress for Iceland.

Reykjavik South Coast tour — Skógafoss waterfall and the black sand coast of southern Iceland
The South Coast's greatest hits — waterfalls, black sand and glaciers — in one day from Reykjavik. Tap to check availability.

If you only have one day to leave Reykjavik, the South Coast is the drive that packs the most Iceland into it: two of the country’s most famous waterfalls, a jet-black volcanic beach, and a glacier you can walk up to — strung along a single scenic road east of the city. It’s the most-booked day trip in Iceland for good reason.

What you’ll see on the classic day

A standard South Coast tour hits four headline stops:

  • Seljalandsfoss — the waterfall you can walk behind, into a curtain of spray (bring a rain jacket).
  • Skógafoss — a thundering 60-metre wall of water with a rainbow on any sunny day; climb the stairs alongside it for the view.
  • Reynisfjara — the dramatic black sand beach near the village of Vík, framed by basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
  • Sólheimajökull — the tongue of a glacier you can stand beside (and hike on, with some tours).

It’s a full, satisfying day on its own — and the version most people should book first.

When to extend the day

Two upgrades are worth knowing about, both in the options below:

  • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon + Diamond Beach — icebergs drifting in a lagoon and glittering on a black beach. They’re stunning, but they’re much farther east, turning the day into a long 12–14 hours. Worth it if you won’t get out there otherwise.
  • A Katla ice cave — descend into a blue-black ice cave inside a glacier, an add-on available year-round on certain tours (unlike the natural winter-only caves).

If your schedule is tight or you’re prone to long-drive fatigue, the classic South Coast day is the smarter pick.

A safety word on Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara is beautiful and genuinely dangerous: it’s known for sudden “sneaker waves” that surge far up the sand without warning. Never turn your back on the sea, keep well back from the waterline, and follow your guide’s instructions. It’s the one stop where the rules matter.

When to go — and what to wear

  • Summer (June–August): long daylight (near-midnight sun), green landscapes, the easiest driving — but the busiest roads and stops.
  • Winter (Nov–March): snow-dusted drama, a chance of northern lights on the way home, and ice-cave season — but short days and weather that can shorten or cancel tours.

Whatever the season, dress for all of it: waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, a hat and gloves, and sturdy waterproof shoes. The waterfalls soak you, the black beach is windy, and Iceland’s weather changes by the hour. Tours run rain, snow or shine.
