Reykjavik · South Coast · Iceland
Iceland's greatest-hits day trip. Stand behind Seljalandsfoss, feel the spray of mighty Skógafoss, walk the black sands of Reynisfjara and reach a glacier's edge — all on one guided South Coast tour from Reykjavik, with hotel pickup and an expert driver-guide.
The Experience
What makes the South Coast Iceland's most-booked day trip from Reykjavik.
From a Reykjavik pickup to waterfalls, black sands and glaciers, and back.
Your driver-guide collects you from your Reykjavik hotel or a nearby bus stop in the morning. Settle into a comfortable coach or minibus for the drive east.
First the waterfalls: walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss, then stand before the thundering 60-metre wall of Skógafoss. Rainbows on a clear day are common.
Continue to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach near Vík with its basalt columns and sea stacks, and to the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier. Longer tours push on to the glacier lagoon or an ice cave.
Relax for the scenic drive home, arriving back in Reykjavik in the evening. In winter, some tours watch for the northern lights on the way.

Before You Book
The waterfalls, black beach and glacier on the classic day, when to extend to the glacier lagoon or an ice cave, and how to dress for Iceland.

If you only have one day to leave Reykjavik, the South Coast is the drive that packs the most Iceland into it: two of the country’s most famous waterfalls, a jet-black volcanic beach, and a glacier you can walk up to — strung along a single scenic road east of the city. It’s the most-booked day trip in Iceland for good reason.
A standard South Coast tour hits four headline stops:
It’s a full, satisfying day on its own — and the version most people should book first.
Two upgrades are worth knowing about, both in the options below:
If your schedule is tight or you’re prone to long-drive fatigue, the classic South Coast day is the smarter pick.
Reynisfjara is beautiful and genuinely dangerous: it’s known for sudden “sneaker waves” that surge far up the sand without warning. Never turn your back on the sea, keep well back from the waterline, and follow your guide’s instructions. It’s the one stop where the rules matter.
Whatever the season, dress for all of it: waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, a hat and gloves, and sturdy waterproof shoes. The waterfalls soak you, the black beach is windy, and Iceland’s weather changes by the hour. Tours run rain, snow or shine.

What you'll see, how long it takes, when to go and what to pack.
The classic South Coast day trip from Reykjavik visits the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the Reynisfjara black sand beach near Vík, and a glacier such as Sólheimajökull. Tours include hotel or bus-stop pickup in Reykjavik and an English-speaking driver-guide. Meals and any glacier-hike or ice-cave add-ons are usually extra — check the specific listing.
The classic South Coast day runs about 10 to 11 hours door to door from Reykjavik. Tours that extend to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach are much longer — roughly 12 to 14 hours — because of the long drive farther east. Tours with a Katla ice cave fall in between. It's a full day either way, so start early and dress warmly.
The classic South Coast day trip generally starts around $129 to $133 per person. Adding the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon pushes it to about $230, and a Katla ice cave tour to around $287, because of the extra distance and the guided ice-cave portion. Small-group tours cost a little more than large coaches. Most include hotel pickup.
The glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach are spectacular — icebergs drifting in the water and glittering on black sand. But they're far east of the classic stops, turning the trip into a 12 to 14 hour day. It's worth it if you won't otherwise reach that part of Iceland; if your time or energy is limited, the classic South Coast day is the better first choice.
Summer (June to August) brings long daylight, green landscapes and the easiest driving, but the busiest stops. Winter (November to March) offers snowy drama, a chance of northern lights on the drive home, and ice-cave season — but short days and weather that can shorten or cancel tours. The South Coast runs year-round; just dress and plan for the season.
In winter, some South Coast tours watch for the northern lights on the drive back to Reykjavik if conditions are right, but it's never guaranteed — the aurora depends on clear skies and solar activity. If seeing the lights is a priority, consider a dedicated northern-lights tour as well. The South Coast itself is a daytime sightseeing trip.
Reynisfjara is stunning but genuinely dangerous because of sudden 'sneaker waves' that rush far up the beach without warning, plus cold water and strong currents. Never turn your back on the sea, stay well back from the waterline, and follow your guide's safety instructions at all times. It's the one stop where caution really matters.
Dress for changeable Icelandic weather: a waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, a hat and gloves, and sturdy waterproof shoes. The waterfalls will soak you (especially Seljalandsfoss, which you walk behind) and the black beach is windy. Bring a camera, water and snacks, and any motion-sickness remedy if you're sensitive on winding roads.
Most South Coast tours offer pickup from Reykjavik hotels or designated bus stops around the city, starting in the morning. Your exact pickup point and time are confirmed on your booking voucher. Be ready a little early, as pickups run on a route. Larger coaches may use central bus stops rather than individual hotels — check your tour's details.
Some South Coast tours include or offer an optional guided glacier hike on Sólheimajökull with crampons and a glacier guide, while others simply stop at the glacier's edge for views and photos. If a glacier walk is important to you, choose a tour that explicitly lists it, as it requires the right equipment and a certified guide — never walk on a glacier alone.
